Consider how often you run and for how long.

It is important to consider how often you run, as in times per week, and how long each run is, as in minutes per run. Do not make the mistake of only considering what you are doing now, but also consider how often and long your runs will be in 4 months. In other words, if you are planning on adding more mileage in the next few months, you need to take that into consideration when buying your running shoes.

Most runners will fall into one of two categories:
You run no more than 30 minutes per day, no more than 3 days per week. If that's the case, a regular pair of sneakers should be fine for you, especially if you are just starting out. You probably don't need to buy new shoes unless you want to. In fact, what you have now is probably fine, so go run! However, if you have been running for a year (or more) or find yourself having trouble with injuries (shin splints, IT band, knee pain), you may want to go ahead and buy a good pair of running shoes.

You run no less than 30 minutes per day, 3 or more times per week. If you are running this often and this long, it is imperative that you have the right shoes for your foot type.

For me, I can't emphasize enough how much it helped me to have a feet and running style evaluation at a store which specializes just in the needs of runners. They really helped me choose shoes that I would have never considered in the past, and which greatly reduced discomfort I was experiencing after running.

Wishing you success!

Lots of running shoes that are under $40 are Pieces of crap. They do not support your feat and will cause problems if you are an avid runner. I think price is important, yes, but it is not everything.

the worse the conditions are, the more prepared you are for the future. i always think of it like that. u'll always run into obstacles and preparing for it sooner rather than later would help in the long run.

I am addicted to running, since it the best way to reduce weight and my running partner is NIKE.

Just check out the latest " Nike Air Max Assail III (http://www.shoedeals4u.com/detail.asp?ShoeId=312960-442) ", which I ordered through "shoedeals4u.com".

if you suffer from any ailments such as shin splints - go to a sports podiatrist first.

I've set up a site to chart my progress and write about techniques or products that have helped. The site is still in its infancy - but hopefully will grow with other people input.

thanks for the great info. I am in the first category, running a few days a week about 30-45 minutes. I still get knee pain, which stops me from running more. I think that I will go to a running store for some help!

I started running 40 years ago before "running shoes" were invented. You had to run properly in those days. Modern shoes are designed to enable you to run the incorrect way and injure yourself.

I always buy a cheap pair of unbranded shoes that are as flat as possible. I would recommend plimsols or barefoot running, but this will cause you lots of pain in the ankle and planar facia areas in the short term and you will think I am an idiot.

In the end shoe companies are there to make money and they will sell you the most expensive pair they can.

I would say that the type of shoes you wear makes no difference so buy the cheapest that feel comfortable.

There is no scientific evidence to say that running shoes are good for your feet, in fact there are more injuries nowadays and the injury rate seems to increase as the price of the shoe increases!

There are a few posts about shoes on my blog www.howto-run-faster.com if you are interested. I have to add some more comments to it but have been too busy training lately:D
