Do lots of miles increase your speed? Some runners prefer to get mileage from long runs, others prefer short intense speed sessions. Or maybe something inbetween?

How many miles a week do you do?

I try to run at least 20, but would like to get to 30-35.:)

Mileage will help you sustain speed for a longer period of time, for instance if you are an 800 meter runner, doing up to 10 miles a day will dramatically increase your stamina and be able to sustain a second lap time closer to your first lap without dying off too much.

My mileage varies, but about 10-20 per week, I do a lot more with speed work.

Last year I did 20 miles a week or maybe 25...and i got my 5k to 19:44.....but I was very unhappy with that..so I'm doing 40 or more miles a week now, and after one week, I can run 6 miles at the 5k pace I had last year! More mileage is critical!

A good week for me is 15 miles for 3 days. Two days are my 6 milers and the other day a 3 miler done for speed. Unfortunately that hasn't been happening much lately because my toddler's been needing less sleep and having nightmares. Someday I want to train for my first marathon, just guess it's not going to be any time soon.:(

Danielle,

You are doing awesome! With all that you are juggling and you still manage to do all that....now I really have no excuse at all!

I usually run 3.5 miles 3 to 4 times per week. I don't run really fast, but I like to keep it up at a nice clip. More than any other aerobic activities I've ever done, running is the one thing that helps me to lose weight the quickest. I will be comfortable if I can do the 5ks easily and work up to the 10ks again.

I usually vary the amount that I run from week to week. This depends on whether I am strength training with weights or not. Currently I am which means that I limit the running to about 6 miles a week. When I am strickly on cardio I bring that up to about 12 miles a week.

Riggy, you're doing an awesome job! You'll be doing 10ks soon enough. :) And, I agree, running is the fastest way to lose weight. (I think it's because to run well, you gotta eat right, too.)
