I knew people who ate honey before races as well. They said that it deposits glycogen quickly in the muscles and also gives a natural energy rush. I'd say not to do this on a race longer than the 800 because you could bottom out after all that blood sugar comes down.

Yeah sugar rushes can be great on short distance runs but they are terrible for long distance runner as like you said after the high you will burn out and most people just crash completly after the rush.

You're not going to deplete your glycogen in a 2 minute race. Any track race, or even a 5k, there shouldn't be any problem using honey or energy gel beforehand.

If you were running a marathon and your only food was honey beforehand, then you're in trouble!
