Fartlek is a form of road running or cross country running in which the runner, usually solo, varies the pace significantly during the run. It is usually regarded as an advanced training technique, for the experienced runner who has been using interval training to develop speed and to raise the anaerobic threshold. However, the 'average' runner can also benefit from a simplified form of Fartlek training, to develop self-awareness and to introduce variety into the training program.

Interval or fartlek training is by far the best way to get in shape fast or push the limits of your fitness. Fartlek is nice because you don't use strictly timed intervals, so it's more fun and still a great workout.

BTW, fartlek is a Swedish word that literally means "speed play." In case you were wondering...

Fartlek is Swedish for speed play. This is a good form of workout to use with athletes once they are capable of running at a steady pace for about 3/4 of an hour. I suggest doing this away from the track preferably in the grass at a park or golf course. We incorporate it into our schedule once per week. How do you do it?
