What's the consensus on drinking a sugar free energy drink, such as red bull, before running?

Not good, the caffeine and other ingredients are going to dehydrate you badly!

agree, any stimulate should be avoided whenever possible

I would advise you to avoid Red Bull all the time!

Stick with drinks like Gatorade and water that don't have all those special herbs and supplements...

i would say stick to a glass of cold water...
nothing refreshes more than a glass of cold water

Red Bull. . . bad! Water. . . great! Stay away from those caffeinated sugary "energy" drinks which cause you nothing but a headache!

Another thing to watch with these "sugar-free" drinks is that they contain sucralose or aspartame, which have worse health effects than sugar.

Gatorade and plain water are my favorites, although there are a couple "healthy energy" drinks called ACT (http://coachlevi.com/product-reviews/act-energy-drink-long-term-test-review/) and FRS (http://coachlevi.com/nutrition/frs-energy-drink-endorsed-by-lance-armstrong/) that look promising.

what about an 8.3 oz red bull with 24 oz of water while lifting in the gym?
