I just started running last week to get into shape. (200lb/5'10") I've done little running in the past but a couple summers ago got into the habit of running 3 miles 2x a week.

Anyways, not liking my last pair of shoes, I went to a running store, and they convinced me to get the New Balance 857's.

After the first couple runs, they felt great, however after my last run, the back part of my ankle, probably 4 inches above the bottom of my foot started to really hurt and I had to stop running. It might be a little sore, but I don't get what the problem is. In case it matters, I use normal socks that are very low cut

Well there could be quite a few causes for that. (And unless it's just a blister, the socks probably didn't make a difference.)

Is is the bone of your ankle? Or your achilles tendon?

Anyway, possible causes...

1. Overtraining. It's easy to do too much, too soon with an impact sport like running (especially after time off.)

2. The shoes. There's a chance they don't work for you, although if you got them at a running store they should be a good choice. So the possibility here is that you need to break them in a bit.

3. Improper form. If your form is off at all, even just a little, it's pretty easy to get injured. Perhaps you are landing too hard on your heels and the impact is taking a toll on your ankle.

Hope you feel better :)
