I have heard several trainers recently say that they like their marathon runners to train without the benefits of Ipods or MP3 players. Why is this? Are they banned from some running competitions? Is it for runner safety?

great question! I've heard that too, that some marathons won't allow IPODS. I couldn't run (or excercise!) without mine. I did read an article once that was advocating against IPODS and the ilk when running because you "miss out" on the external environment during the run...I personally prefer to use my exercise/running time to focus on *MY* internal environment..it's greatly meditative for me, so I personally think the IPOD is great for a run.

I use an MP3 player quite often, although there are benefits to not using them.

First, more and more competitions are banning them, so if you train with one all the time then can't use it during a race, you could feel "lost" during the race.

Second, you can focus more on your body and the task at hand without one.

Third, and most important, safety. For example, the distraction could lead to you getting hit by a car or getting mugged.
