Hey all,

New to forum. I'm a fitness runner....don't run many races but when I do, it is just for the experience not for competition.

I am 5'10", 180 lbs and run 15-18 miles per week. I have very flat fleet and have tried every motion control shoe and insole on the market.

My problem is that when I am not running, I sometimes get a sharp pain in my hip (usually right hip, but sometimes left hip) when I change directions or turn. I never fell pain while running, only when walking and doing normal activities.

I've seen a podiatrist, a physical therapist, a running coach, and an orthopedic doctor. They all say that motion control shoes will fix the problem.

I've had this particular pain for about a year, since I started to run regularly. It is never debilitating and never prevents me from doing anything...it is just sometimes a pain in the butt (and hip). Ha! That was terrible.

Anyway, has anyone experienced anything like this?

While I haven't experienced this personally, I'm afraid my wife has. She too has very flat feet and as a result tends to over-pronate when she runs. This, in turn, gives her trouble and discomfort in her hip(s). What has worked for her recently is a strict stretching regimen for her hip. She stretches in the morning when she wakes up and at night before she goes to bed. In addition, she also stretches pre and post run. The stretches are specific to her hip flexors. She might sit on a chair and set her ankle on the opposite knee and push down on the knee of the top leg gradually. You might want to do an internet search on hip flexor stretches where you might find better explanations and illustrations of each stretch.
Sorry for the long winded reply...Hope it helps!

you should try the soles "superfeet" which correct pronation of the feet. then give it a week or two of steady running to get used to new muscles and form. but keep a good stretch and ice.

Ive had hip pain during and after running in the beginning of my track season. I suggest that you make sure you stretch as the previous people said. an example:

while laying on your back, cross your hurt leg so that the foot is resting on your opposite knee. Make sure to bend the knee of the non hurt leg so you put pressure on the hip. push slowly and softly on your hurt leg knee and bring the unhurt leg's quad towards you slightly.
i cant really explain this much better, but you can search hip flexor stretch and im sure you can find a bunch of hits.
also to relieve pain sometimes you just need to warm it up. before practice in warmups keep myself balanced against a door or wall and swing my leg so that my plant foot and swinging foot are both facing the wall. it kind of looks like a pendulum. Anyway this can stretch your hip too.

I can't help you with the flat feet really.
