I am new to running- how long should I get acclimated and train before committing to run a half marathon? What is the best running schedule for training? I don't necessarily want to win, just finish!

Good for you! I think 4-6 months can provide you with adequate time to train. You may want to check with your local running clubs in your area and see if they have training suggestions ans ways to get involved with their training sessions.

stressmom, I agree with ahop23...4-6months before your 1/2 is an ideal amount of time to build up enough endurance to achieve your goal of finishing the race. I just ran my first 1/2 at the end of January and trained for four months prior. While I was satisfied with my result I wished that I'd had two more months of training. As ahop23 suggested, check with your local running stores or clubs for training tips and/or sessions where you might be afforded the oppurtunity of training with others which is usually less cumbersome.
In addition, you might want to participate in some 5Ks, 10Ks, etc. in hopes of getting comfortable with the mileage and racing experience.
Happy trails.

Another bonus is that if you get involved with a local running club, you will make new friends and get some motivation and support from others that you may not have had otherwise. Also some running stores that help sponsor these clubs will sometimes give shoe and clothing discount, so happy shopping with that extra added bonus!
