Hey gang,

I am brand new to the forums. I started running on the treadmill half heartedly January 2007 because I have a quarterly physical fitness test for work where I have to run 1.5 miles and no longer wanted to dread this run but basically survive it and do decent. Well since then a lot has changed. Btw my best 1.5 mile run time was 18:45 and is now 12:10 but I havnt run the 1.5 for work for time since Oct. 07.
My entire life I have been a slow runner, I work to hard when running because I take short choppy steps etc. A buddy of mine is a big time runner and he got my stride better, I bought a good pair of Asics designed for my arch height and pronation etc. and now I run outdoors more. BTW Im 34y/o, 5'9" 165lbs and not overweight.

With that history here in lies my question and need of advice. When on the treadmill I run/walk for 2 miles in roughly 20 minutes. My heart rate is usually around 150 with no real labored breathing but I get a horrible lactic acid buildup in my calves but when I run outdoors my HR hits 190 (which I think is insanely high) and I am very short of breath but my legs never get uncomfortable (complete opposite of the treadmill). My current workout is a round trip 1.5 miles down hill to a point at brisk walk 12min/mile - 13min/mile and then run back up the hill 8min/mile with a couple (literally two) short two house long walks then run again. My goal isnt to be some long distance runner, I just recently rejoined the Army Guard and need to be able to accomplish a 2 mile run for my PT test.

Any advice please, I am trying to stay away from the treadmill these days btw.

A little update I added in some distance on the flat before I start my run uphill, roughly .3 to .5 miles and my HR stays constant at 160 on the flat and never gets over 189 on the uphill now. My endurance uphill stayed exactly the same even with added distance on the flat before I start uphill with only a little muscle pain the next day. So I am happy since I am seeing improvement. BTW thanks for all the advice, er wait, nm,
