I had an undifeated middle school season without spikes. This is the first year Ive used them in competition. They kill my calves during and after racing. I recently used runing shoes they feel great. Ill finish my season in my running shoes but am I doomed from spikes forever.

I never used spikes in middle school and I do not use them now and I still seem to do well. If you keep racing with spikes your calves will get used to it I am sure, but I am no expert.

your calves are sore because your not used to running more on your mid-foot. spikes push you more up on to your mid-foot and toes. if your not use to it you calves will be sore the next day or toe, but as you race more often you will get use to it.

Hi If you put spikes on after wearing normal shoes all day there will be a slight difference in height at the heel, gently stretch the calves and achillies heel. get used to spikes, do a small warm up on grass if possible wearing the spikes After doing your normal warm up in your trainers, you should wear your spikes all year round in one way or another do not leave big gaps of time in between.

Let me ask you this:
Is your time better with spikes?

you just need to buy a less argessive spike. When you go to buy spikes take a walk around the store in them and maybe do a stride or two just to get the feel for them. You also might not be streching enough too. Besides the piont your only in middle school, you dont need to run in spikes till you get to high school. MIddle school track is a joke, you have all of high school and college to run good times.

spikes will not hurt you.if they did people wouldn't buy them. the do take about 30 seconds off your time in xc.
now if your doing xc and you want a more comfy feel go with a more heavy shoe.
ex. brooks mach10
nb xc spike.
for track if your doing long distance, 3200 and up and you dont wanna risk getting hurt with spikes, you could either buy the brooks racer st5 or st9
if not those than jsut any other marathon shoe.
if you do want spikes in the shoe though i would go with the nike ventulus. 4.3oz and has built in small spikes

I used to run middle distance with sprint spikes (since I ran only 1 middle distance event). They didn't affect me negatively. I would not recommend doing that however, because there is an obvious difference in shock absorption. However, spikes are much lighter than running shoes. You can however buy racing flats or marathon shoes. They barely weigh anything as well. If you get distance spikes, they are basically running shoes with spikes on them... The closer you get to sprinting the more raised the shoe will be.
